The Busy Believer's Bible Plan | Best Easy Bible Reading Plan [+ FREE Printable]

The Busy Believer's Bible Plan | Best Easy Bible Reading Plan [+ FREE Printable]

You're likely expecting a list of dates and Bible passages below, but surprisingly, you won't find any! That's because this unique 3-year Bible plan is designed with you in mind — helping you enjoy every minute of your daily Bible reading! Bible plans can easily feel like a chore. With 1,189 chapters, Bible-in-a-year plans require believers to race through Scripture. Miss a day, and suddenly the workload doubles. If we're honest, it can make Revelation 22 seem like a distant dream.

Enter: this simple, guilt-free, enjoyable Bible plan. 😎 Instead of offering lists of daily readings to 'get through' each day, you choose what to read. This guide just gives you a daily pattern to encourage a healthy amount of Scripture and provide a good balance of both Testaments.

The Plan Itself

As explained earlier, The Busy Believer's Bible Plan is not a calendar. It's a simple Bible reading guide with a few straightforward guidelines you can easily remember and incorporate into your daily Bible routine over the next three years. That said, it's a good idea to keep track. That's why I am providing you with a FREE Printable Bible Plan Checklist you can download immediately! 🙂 Without further ado, here is the plan:

  1. Read ONE Old Testament chapter (excl. Psalms) per weekday.
  2. Read ONE New Testament chapter per weekday.
  3. Read ONE Psalm per weekend day. (Psalm 119 can be split across up to three weekends)

Bonus tips:

  • If you’re unsure where to begin, start with Genesis in the Old Testament and John’s Gospel in the New, then choose your next book from there.
  • The timing of your day is entirely up to you. Mornings are strongly recommended to prepare you for the day ahead and to give you God's truth to meditate on. However, you can also split your weekday readings into a morning and evening session if you prefer.
  • Download the free printable Bible plan and print it out (A5 for your Bible or A4 for your wall) so you can track which books of the Bible you've finished. You'll notice one checkbox for Old Testament books, two for the Psalms, and three for New Testament books. This reflects the number of times you'll be reading through each section of God's Word.

Why Choose This Bible Plan?

The main aim of this plan is to establish a healthy structure and balance in your Bible reading routine, with restful weekends and an appropriate portion of Scripture each day. It offers a guide that is flexible and full of choices (unlike many rigid plans). Its simplicity is its greatest strength, featuring a straightforward daily reading pattern that works remarkably well.

The math has been done for you: By reading one Old Testament chapter (excluding Psalms) each weekday, you’ll complete the entire Old Testament in three years with four days to spare. Likewise, by reading one New Testament chapter per weekday, you’ll finish the whole New Testament in a year, with only one day to spare each time.

On weekends, reading one Psalm per day (two per week) will take you through the entire book of Psalms twice in three years—with six days remaining each time, giving you the option to spread out the longest chapter in the Bible, Psalm 119, over up to three weekends (if you'd like).

Here are some more reasons to choose this Bible plan...

1. Balanced Focus on Old & New Testaments

The Old Testament constitutes about 78% of the Bible. This indicates that, when following standard Genesis-to-Revelation Bible plans, only roughly one-fifth of our Bible reading time is dedicated to the New Testament! Given the immense importance of the New Testament and its focus on the New Covenant, this appears imbalanced.

Certainly, the Bible states: 'All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.' (2 Timothy 3:16–17) At the same time, the New Testament’s focus on the New Covenant—described as 'much more glorious' than the Old (2 Corinthians 3:7–11)—strongly supports giving proper attention to New Covenant revelation.

That’s why this 3-year Bible plan includes one reading of the Old Testament, two readings of the Psalms, and three readings of the New Testament (one per year)! Surprisingly, even with this increase, we’ll still spend more time in the Old Testament overall (around 55% in the Old and 45% in the New). However, the result is a much more balanced approach—both in terms of timing and spiritual focus.

2. Designed for Busy Christians

With no more than two chapters each weekday, this Bible reading plan is shorter than most! Additionally, weekends are designed to be peaceful and reflective, offering an opportunity to focus on one Psalm every day of the weekend, and possibly what God has revealed to you through His Word that week. The lighter weekend readings also provide a little extra space to catch up on Bible reading during particularly busy weeks.

Busy Christians with full-time jobs and families now have the chance to easily read through the Bible in a way that is spiritually refreshing and all-round beneficial. No part of the Bible is overlooked. Yet, with a healthy focus on the New Testament & Psalms, you'll remain grounded in the gospel of Jesus and be encouraged in your walk with God week by week! 🙌

3. Enjoyable & Flexible (The Plan For You!)

Last but not least, you get to choose what you read! This is a great advantage. For the past several years, I've followed a flexible Bible reading plan and found it a great blessing to pick books of the Bible to read. You know yourself better than anyone else on earth, and it also helps to keep you engaged. There is, of course, the danger that you'll end up avoiding certain books and losing sight of some biblical teachings. Thankfully, this plan offers the best of both worlds since you'll read every book of the Bible while being able to choose the order. This makes Bible reading much more enjoyable than being directed by a fixed plan.

In January 2025, I set myself the goal of reading the Bible in a year. It started well... but by the time I reached the middle of Leviticus, I was craving the New Testament letters such as Romans or Galatians. I know myself, and while Leviticus is both essential and wonderful (I recently went back and finished it), I needed a direct reminder of the central message of the gospel. The Apostle Paul writes, 'For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures...' (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). Notice that the gospel is of 'first importance', not implying that God's Word varies in validity or value, but that the gospel message is most important! This plan allows for those sorts of decisions, while encouraging the believer to dedicate time and attention to every word of God!
